AGE REQUIREMENTS

BEGINNERS   AGE 4-5

Does your child dream of becoming an elegant Figure Skater, or a courageous Hockey Player? It all begins here for our pre-schoolers!   Every potential skater, regardless of discipline, needs to understand the fundamentals of ice skating.  Aerodrome uses a special program called SNOWPLOW SAMS developed under the umbrella of the Unites States Figure Skating Association. SNOWPLOW SAM is part ofthe USFS basic skills courses and consists of 3 levels. Children in Snowplow Sam classes are of ages 4 and 5 learn the fundamentals of skating through a series of 30 minute weekly classes for between 8-10 weeks. Skaters are taught the basic principles of walking, gliding, stops, swizzles, wiggles and backward skating in a fun environment. Special 'walking Frames' are available for those skaters who need them!

Beginners ages 4&5 should regsiter in Snowplow 1

Upon completion of SNOWPLOW SAM 3:-

Figure skaters enroll in Learn to Skate Basic 1

Hockey Players enroll in Hockey 101

All children enrolled in Snowplow Sam Class must be minimum age 3.5 yrs and should and be Potty Trained!!

BEGINNERS   AGE 6-15

New skaters in this age group enroll in Aerodrome Learn to Skate Program at the Basic I level. Skaters will learn the basics of skating which include skating forwards & backwards, gliding, and stopping.  The course is usually between 8-10 weeks in length. Skaters will be evaluated on their skills towards the end of the course and USFS record books will be issued. Completed testing forms will be distributed on the last week of classes so that the parents will know in which class to register their skater for the next session. The lead coach may move a student to the next level before the end of the semester if it is apparent that he/she has mastered all the skills in their current grade.

There are a total of eight learn to Skate basic skills levels to master.  Once a skater has completed level 8, he or she will be able to enroll in the learn to Skate Freeskate Class or even consider the Junior Blades Team which is Aerodromes Competitive preparation track .  In Basic Skills Freeskate levels skaters learn sequences of steps, how to connect maneuvers, and how to execute a variety of spins and jumps

WHAT TO WEAR

In order to insure your child’s figure skating class experience is the most fun and efficient, it is necessary to dress him/her appropriately. Clothing worn while figure skating should allow for adequate movement and stretching of the body while keeping the skater warm. Long athletic pants and sweatshirts or jackets are appropriate. Mittens and hats are recommended as well!

If you would like to purchase a figure skating dress or skirt for your child, please feel free to do so. We recommend two pairs of tights and a fleece skating jacket to keep warm while being fashionable. The Aerodrome Pro-Shop also offers boys figure skating attire. Most of these items can be found reasonably priced in our Pro-Shop.

While rental skates are available for use, you may want to consider purchasing skates for your child. As professionally fitted skates will be of higher quality and more comfortable, your child may progress at a faster pace. Please feel free to stop in our Pro-Shop and take a look at our merchandise at your convenience
